“Be Holy For I am Holy”
This devotion will focus on God’s holiness and his call to us to be holy as well. Leviticus 11:44 “I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” We know God is holy. It is one of the unchanging attributes of His character. The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines holy as “exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.” God is perfect-without sin. He not only acts holy-He is Holy. All of His thoughts and actions are holy. We are sinful beings. We know what is right but don’t always do it. We can look holy on the outside while being filled with sin and hate on the inside. How can we ever be holy? - Yet, God commands us to be holy. God gave the Israelites commandments and laws to keep them on the right path, but they could not keep the law perfectly. They could not be holy on their own. This concept of holiness is important to God; the word is mentioned in about 130 verses, beginning in Genesis and going on through to Revelation. So God sent his holy Son to take on all our sin and be our perfect sacrifice. Jesus led the perfect holy life we could not. His actions and attitudes were perfectly aligned with God’s will. In John 6:38 Jesus states “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me” Our convention verse, Galatians 3:27 talks about being clothed in Christ through Baptism. When we believe in Christ as our Savior and become baptized, we are made holy. God has reached out to us and made us holy through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection so we can be in fellowship with Him. So we are holy. So why do we still sin? Why don’t our lives demonstrate that holiness all the time? That is the topic of our next devotion. Stay tuned. |
