From the Bible (NIV):

Isaiah 6:8

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”  And I said, “Here am I.  Send me!”

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

As I was contemplating what I wanted to write about for this devotion the lyrics of a popular contemporary song "Human” sung by Natalie Grant caught my attention.  I think the first verse really speaks to what we as Lutheran Women in Mission work toward:

♫Every life has a choice, to rise above, to fill a void

Every heart has a mission, and we are called to be human

We gotta do better than this, ‘cause we only got one chance to make a difference

Gotta do better than this, ‘cause we only got one life that we’ve been given

Little love, little kindness, little light in this time of darkness

It’ll be what makes us different; it’ll be what makes us human♫

During the next two years we all will be working to fund the twelve mission grants we voted on at our district convention in Grand Junction this past June.  They total $75,000 which is A LOT of mites!  As members of the LWML we truly demonstrate our heart for missions through our district and national mission grant programs.

Isaiah 6:8 says “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”  And I said, “Here am I.  Send me!”  As we contribute to our mite goals we are making a decision to share our resources to fund mission grants.  We choose to make a difference in our own small way.  We may not be able to travel to Haiti but we can help feed the Haitian children with our mission grant to Trinity/HOPE.  Most of us will never see Africa but we will help train pastors there for gospel outreach.  Each time we “feed” our mite box we are affirming our willingness to respond to the Lord and make a difference in the lives of others.

In addition to listening to contemporary Christian music on my radio I’m reading Max Lucado’s new book Outlive Your Life and exploring the premise that we were made to make a difference.  I don’t think it is any coincidence that this “make a difference” theme is popping up in the songs I’m hearing on the radio and the book I’m reading right now.  We are told in Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” In other words we were created to make a difference in our world with the good works God has planned for us to do.  Perhaps in addition to helping fund mission grants with our mites we should also seek God’s guidance regarding how we can help our local LWML group to be more effective in their local ministry efforts or even consider getting more involved in zone or district leadership roles or serving on a committee.  What can you do to make a difference in the mission field locally, regionally, nationally or internationally?

We pray:  Lord help me to know where you want me to serve you; how I can make a difference in my world today.
